They understand how important it is to have the correct fitting ski or snowboard boots and custom insoles for control and comfort. Gnomes are the ski and snowboard boot fitting specialists. Check out our wide range of boots.

The Process

Step 1 - The technician will examine and discuss your bio-mechanical make up by looking at the mobility and flexibility in your foot, ankle and calf. The technician will ask you about your sporting activities, fitness, injuries and future goals. They will then determine whether you pronate, supinate or remain neutral.

Step 2 - The technician will help select the correct technical socks for ultimate comfort and temperature control. A maximum of 2 ski/snowboard boots will be selected that suit your anatomical foot shape, ability and future goals.

Step 3 - Once the boot has been selected the technician will advise on the correct custom insole/footbed to further enhance comfort and performance.

Step 4 - Custom insoles are moulded to the contour of the feet to gain a neutral position and align lower limbs. A stabilising block or tabs are added to the insole and then ground to increase stability.

Step 5 - Final adjustments are made to liners and shells to further increase comfort, these may be expanding the shell and adding or removing foam. Canting on ski boot cuffs is done to optimise the lower leg alignment.

Step 6 – The technician may discuss with you, exercises and stretches that will increase comfort and improve your skiing technique.

Step 7 – Go riding, the boot will take a few days to get to its optimal comfort. Any problems after that you will need a technician to work on the boots, this is common practice.

Boot fitting tips

>Don’t try on too many boots, it will confuse you in making a final decision
>Invest in a good technical ski or snowboard specific sock, only wear one at a time!
>Work into your budget a insole/footbed, this makes or breaks the comfort of the ski boot
>Boots are snug, toes will touch the end when walking around in a ski shop
>99% of people would NOT find a ski boot comfortable straight off the shelf
>Find a good boot technician that suggests technical socks, insoles/footbeds these are definite benefits to you
>Do not over tighten the buckles or laces especially across the instep
>Make sure both feet are measured in centimetres (mondo point)

How do Custom insoles help?

Distributing over three times your body weight through your feet it is often hard to apply constant pressure to edges needed for control. Custom insoles are the foundations of a good fitting boot, they allow correct distribution of pressure, which increases comfort and performance.

We mould the insole directly to the contours of the feet while you wait. The feet are the foundations of the entire body, therefore we must support them correctly with a custom insole, otherwise major problems will occur. Pronation and supination are normal bio-mechanical motions that the foot must do to perform correctly, when either of these motions becomes excessive they can cause foot fatigue, knee, hip and back pain, a Gnomes custom insole will prevent this from happening. All foot types including neutral feet benefit from custom insoles by improving comfort, performance and weight distribution while aligning the lower leg they decrease fatigue, impact and shock.
